The Youth Carnival

Carnival brings itself the possibility of fusion between art, culture, tradition and innovation.

Since 1984, year the Sambódromo was founded, the Youth Samba Schools developed socio-cultural activities, bringing the city of Rio de Janeiro closer to its roots.

Carnival unites various languages that are part of everyday life, history and city imaginary, creating dialogs between the art, the popular and the society. The Carnival Factory and the Headquarters of the Samba Schools are like a research and production center which involves artists, educators and cultural producers, proposing methodologies, projects, artistic and educational work.

The AESM-Rio is the union of seventeen Youth Samba Schools that take more than twenty thousand children annually to the Marques de Sapucaí, with parades that narrate historical events and promote reflection on human rights, education, cultural identity, society and the environment.

The Youth Carnival also develops initiatives to preserve cultural identity and promotion of Brazilian culture. Today the spectacle attracts more than 70 thousand spectators, mostly family members of the school’s components.

The Youth Samba Schools expresses, by means of their various languages proper to them, looks on the world in an allegorical, creative and challenging way. An accessible art, that communicates, excites, includes the expression of diverse communities and their children, an art that entertains!

The headquarters of the Rio de Janeiro Samba is intangible cultural heritage, which express the Brazilian diversity, integrate regions of the City and its creative potential.
