Pimpolhos da Grande Rio the Rio Grande has been engaged in the socio-cultural life of the city of Duque de Caxias and port area of Rio de Janeiro for the past 10 years, conducting “carnavalesca” (carnivalesque or Carnival-related) activities--the production of the parade floats, costumes, and props; and artistic and cultural workshops--all fabricated with reused materials whenever possible.

The floats and costumes of each samba school in the parade all have an overarching theme and plot. Carnaval Pedagógico, which began in 2007, is a non-formal education project which, in a playful and imaginative way, explores the plot and theme of Pimpolhos’ parade in greater depth. The project includes workshops for the children who participate in the parade to teach them underlying concepts behind the plot the samba enredo tells, such as the meaning of the floats and costumes, educating those who will be parading about the larger political, social or cultural message the samba school will communicate through the parade. They also learn more about the components of a samba school. Families of paraders are included as well, participating in the production of pieces for floats, costumes, and props for Pimpolhos’ parade during Carnival.

Carnaval Pedagógico involves many people at Pimpolhos: children and two families, artists, educators, teachers, producers, colleagues at partner institutions, and  the "presidentes de ala" (the adults in charge of each group of 50 to 100 children parading and wearing the same costume). The Pimpolhos parade during Carnival includes 1500 to 1700 children, 200 "presidentes de ala,” and 30 youth and adults who participate in the Escola de Carnaval (Carnival School) project.

During the 4 months leading up to Carnival, Pimpolhos conducts imaginative and playful activities that stimulate creativity and aid in a deeper understanding of the plot and of the concepts communicated through the costumes, floats and production of the Carnival for children. Pimpolhos’ plots always focus on issues related to human rights, environmental preservation, appreciation of popular culture, and the importance of school and family in the lives of children and adolescents.

THIS PROJECT HAS TWO GROUPS OF DIRECT BENEFICIARIES:

• 1,500 children and adolescents and 100 "presidentes de ala" (the adults in charge of each group of 50 to 100 children parading) participating in the Carnaval Pedagógico workshops;

• 30 youth and adults who participate in the Escola de Carnaval (Carnival School) project.

The goal of the Carnaval Pedagógico project is to create the space and opportunity for the community of Duque de Caxias to have more interaction with the message of the plot and theme of the parade, exploring the concepts expressed in the floats, costumes, and props of the Carnival for children.
